Math workshop / two useful skills
Let’s learn it step by step.
Use a calculator to change fractions into decimals. Then compare place values to order decimals from least to greatest.

Skill 01
Change a fraction to a decimal
- Find the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number).
- On your calculator, enter top number ÷ bottom number =.
- Find the choice that matches the decimal answer. Put a 0 before the decimal point when the answer is less than 1.
- All 10 fractions here have decimals that end. Do not round. Choose the full exact answer; zeros at the end do not change its value.
Worked example3/5 → 3 ÷ 5 = 0.6
Three fifths is 0.6. You may also write 0.60. For 7/4, enter 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75—some answers are greater than 1.
Skill 02
Order decimals step by step
- Write the numbers with their decimal points lined up.
- Add zeros at the end to show equal decimal places. The value does not change: 0.6 = 0.60 = 0.600.
- Compare whole numbers first. If they match, compare tenths, then hundredths, then thousandths. The first different digit tells you which is smaller.
- Look for the choice ordered least to greatest. It must use every given number once.
Worked exampleOrder 0.6, 0.46, 0.406.
0.406 < 0.460 < 0.600
Choose the list: 0.406, 0.46, 0.6. More decimal digits does not mean a greater number!
